A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a remote, always-on computer where you run MetaTrader 5 and your EA 24/5, independent of your own machine or connection. If you automate trading, it is mandatory infrastructure, not a luxury.
Why an EA needs a VPS
- 24/5 availability. Your EA must trade even if you shut the laptop, your WiFi drops or there is a power cut. A disconnect during news can leave positions open with no protection.
- Low latency. A VPS near the broker's server executes orders in milliseconds. In volatile moments, latency is the difference between your price and expensive slippage.
- Stability. No Windows updates restarting your PC mid-trade.
What to look for in a VPS for MT5
- Location. Near your broker's server (many in London LD4 or New York NY4). Less distance = less latency.
- Uptime. 99.9% or higher. A VPS that goes down defeats its purpose.
- Resources. For one or two MT5 terminals, 2 GB RAM and 2 vCPU usually suffice. More terminals = more resources.
- Windows. MetaTrader 5 runs natively on Windows; make sure the VPS offers it.
Broker VPS vs independent VPS
Many brokers offer a free VPS if you keep a certain volume or balance β convenient and with minimal latency to the broker. An independent VPS (Cloudzy, ForexVPS, etc.) gives you more control and does not tie you to the broker. To start, the broker VPS is usually enough.
